The National Sports Day is widely known on 29 August, on the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, who is considered nation's greatest ice-hockey player of all time.

Significance of National Sports Day:-

Other than spreading awareness on the importance of sports, the big day also highlights the achievements and contributions of Chand to India's rich sports history and culture.

The President confers National Sports Awards to honour sportsmen who have achieved laurels within the sports realm and enhanced country's pride everywhere the planet .

After the death of Chand in 1979, the Indian Postal Department issued stamps in his honour. As a tribute to him, the National Stadium of Delhi was also renamed to Major Dhyan Chand stadium.

This auspicious day was celebrated at MRIS Ludhiana to spread awareness on the importance of sports and physical activities in every individual’s life. The event started with an oath ceremony wherein children pledged to bring glory to the state by participating various sports.

This year, events like jelly fish race and fun race were held for the pre-primary students as a neighborhood of National Sports Day celebrations. Likewise, for primary wing, balance the shuttle, cap the cone and lots of more fun races were organized. For upper primary and secondary wing, 100 mts flat race was conducted.

Principal Ms. Anju Dhawan felicitated the winners and addressed the scholars with a message that education without sports activities is incomplete. Holistic development of a student is feasible only he/she is physically fit and emotionally balanced.
